Recreating the Wacom Tablet Experience.
Wacom is the leading creator of digital pen tools for the new creative class. Their products can be seen in almost every studio, firm, and agency around the world. While with New Studio, I took the lead on completely redesigning the Intuos tablet, packaging, and heads up display, to reflect new trends among the massive user base. Being a Wacom users, we were more than happy to help design a product we use every day.
Less is more.
Our design approach for the Wacom Intuos 5 tablet focused on creating a seamless bridge between analog and digital creativity through refined ergonomics and intuitive interaction. We prioritized a clean, minimalist aesthetic that wouldn't distract from the creative process, while carefully positioning the customizable ExpressKeys and touch ring to enhance workflow efficiency. The result is a professional tool that feels natural in hand, with thoughtful material choices and proportions that support extended creative sessions while maintaining the precise control that digital artists demand.
Wacom’s first HUD
Working with the Wacom team, we started from the ground up to design an entirely new tablet experience. Because the tablet itself could not display what was on the screen, the tactile and visual cues it could provide became top priority. The goal was to have the user never to have to remove their eyes from their screens, or put down their pen. Thus the heads up display and touch interface we're born, allowing seamless transition from pen to other tools without the need for a mouse.
Packaging
The Wacom Intuos 5 packaging design demonstrates our commitment to sustainable design through innovative use of recycled paper pulp molding. This eco-friendly approach creates custom-fitted protective forms that eliminate the need for plastic inserts while providing superior cushioning for the tablet during shipping. The molded pulp packaging not only reduces environmental impact but also enhances the unboxing experience with its organic, tactile quality that reflects the handcrafted nature of digital artistry—proving that responsible design choices can elevate rather than compromise the premium product experience.
